Strong smells coming from the vaginal area can often just be a strong natural odour and nothing to worry about. However in some cases, strong vaginal smells can be caused by low-level bacterial infections that are not sexually transmitted
One possibility is something called bacterial vaginosis, but there are other possible bacterial infections that often cause an offensive vaginal smell, sometimes ‘fishy’ in nature.
These are not of a sexually transmitted type.
Another common cause of such an odour is the presence in the vagina of some material that shouldn’t be there, such as a tampon. If a tampon is stuck in there or part of a tampon then this could be the source.
If it is, it might not be due to any kind of disease, but just to the odour of the natural vaginal fluids that change under the influence of the monthly hormones. Unfortunately, this is the most difficult one to treat.
It is probably hormonally linked and will settle with time.
Also, don’t forget that the odour of the natural vaginal fluids changes under the influence of the monthly hormones. Avoid using douches or feminine hygiene products as these can sometimes irritate the vagina.
